Our founder passes away...

On May 15th, 2008, Vahé Aslanian, Founding Director of the Camerata Singers, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. The Camerata Singers will always remember Vahé’s talent for unique programming, including his own editions of Renaissance and Baroque music as well as arrangements of California mission music of the 18th century. Vahé earned music degrees from Boston University and Claremont Graduate School, completing his doctorate at Stanford and was awarded Fulbright and Rockefeller grants to study early Italian music in Italy. Vahé received numerous awards and honors, including the Cultural Council of Monterey County''s 1995 Benefactor of the Arts Award naming him "Distinguished Arts Educator."

Vahé's memorial service was June 21st, 2008 at St. Pauls’ Episcopal Church in Salinas, California. Of course, we sang for him: Ave verum corpus - W.A. Mozart; How lovely is thy dwelling place - J. Brahms; My shepherd will supply my need - Virgil Thomson and The Lord bless you and keep you - Peter Lutkin
